Matthieu Michel Trio

Matthieu Michel : trumpet
Patrice Moret : double bass
Christophe Calpini : drums, live electronics

The Matthieu Michel Trio brings together three leading figures of the European jazz scene: trumpeter Matthieu Michel, Patrice Moret on double bass, and Christophe Calpini on drums and sound design.

As the driving force behind this project, composer and producer Blaise Caillet provides artistic direction by creating compositions rooted in avant-garde electronic music, which serve as a canvas for the three improvisers to explore. The trio will present this music on a new album to be released in early 2027.

Their music embraces a contemporary jazz style characterized by airy sounds, subtle lyricism, and a keen sense of space. This acoustic elegance is interwoven with electronic textures and beats, creating a soundscape that is both sensitive and resolutely modern.

Matthieu Michel

Matthieu Michel

Described as one of Europe’s finest voices on the trumpet and flugelhorn, Matthieu Michel’s exceptional phrasing and melodic sensibility make him one of the most sought-after musicians: for over four decades, he has lent his exceptional skills as a soloist to countless projects.

Born in 1963 in Fribourg (Switzerland). He began playing the trumpet at the age of 6. Around the age of 18, he took private lessons with Americo Bellotto. These numerous collaborations have led her to perform in some forty countries and are featured on more than 350 recordings (ECM, Blue Note, Universal, ACT…). He also teaches at the Basel Jazz Campus and at the HEMU in Lausanne, and has been honored with a nomination for the Swiss Music Prize (2016) and the European Musician Award from the Jazz Academy (2021).

His recordings include “Blue Light,” his first album, released around the time he left Berlin, “Yves” with the MM 5tet,“Estate” with Richard Galliano, “Benji,” and“Whispers” with Jean-Christophe Cholet“Okipik” and “The Sadness of Yuki,” recordings in duo with Uli Scherer, as well as the famous album “Live at Theatre Oriental.”

Patrice Moret

Patrice Moret

Patrice Moret is a Swiss acoustic double bassist, electric bassist and composer, born in 1972. Raised in a musical environment shaped by gospel, he developed early on a deep listening sensibility, a strong sense of rhythm and a distinctive relationship to sound that continues to define his artistic path. At the age of 21, his encounter with jazz and the double bass led him to study at the Conservatory of Montreux. The beauty of his sound, the depth of his touch and the freedom of his playing have led him to share the stage and the studio with numerous major voices of the international scene, including Ben Monder, Jojo Mayer, Uri Caine, Ted Poor, Ben Perowsky, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lionel Loueke, Grégoire Maret, Arthur Blythe, as well as Malcolm Braff and Matthieu Michel.

He teaches acoustic double bass and improvised music at the Bern University of the Arts. Over the years, he has appeared on 10 ECM releases, including several with the Colin Vallon Trio, with whom he has performed internationally since 2005. He also performs with Matthieu Bordenave’s quartet, alongside James Maddren and Florian Weber, as well as with Parallels, Nicolas Masson’s quartet, and Marc Méan’s trio Fields. Alongside these collaborations, he has developed a more personal voice through his own projects, notably Néon, where composition, improvisation and acoustic textures converge.

Today, alongside his work on the acoustic double bass, Patrice Moret is exploring new territories on the electric bass and within electronic music, notably with the trio El and the Hoiy, pursuing a language of singular, personal and deeply resonant drums-bass duo textures.

Christophe Calpini

Christophe Calpini

Winner of the Swiss Music Prize, drummer, musician, composer, and producer, Christophe Calpini has been spearheading projects in Switzerland and beyond for over twenty years. As a pioneer of Swiss hip-hop alongside Silent Majority and the electronic sounds of Mobile in Motion (with Marc Ribot), he has explored everything from the electro-jazz of STADE (BigDada/NinjaTune) alongside Pierre Audétat to the soul-rock of Dog Almond. Not to mention his collaborations with Alain Bashung, Rodolphe Burger, Erik Truffaz, OY, Pascal Auberson, and Bertrand Belin.

A sound wizard as meticulous as he is inspired, this hyperactive artist loves to sculpt and experiment with sound, as evidenced by his latest albums “OKT4V,” “Motion Sickness,” and“Lâme,” which feature collaborations with several singers and musicians. Notable contributors include Lyn M, the Geneva-based singer from ELVETT (formerly of Aloan), the Franco-Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz, and the French singer Rodolphe Burger, with whom Calpini continues to tour and work on new projects. For the past few years, he has also been working with producer Blaise Caillet, co-producing Rodolphe Burger’s album Avalanche (2024) and working on the Matthieu Michel Trio project.

ABOUT

Blaise Caillet

Blaise Caillet

Blaise Caillet is a Swiss guitarist, composer and producer. He studied jazz guitar in the professional programme at the EJMA (École de Jazz et de Musiques Actuelles) in Lausanne with Jean-Pierre Pasquier, and spent many years performing as a guitarist in jazz, rock, and other musical settings, in Switzerland and abroad. He notably accompanied singer Valérie Lou alongside double bassist Popol Lavanchy, with whom he released two albums and toured in Switzerland and abroad.

In 2011, he turned towards composition and electronic music and created SKNAIL, a project exploring the fusion of jazz improvisation and minimal electronic music. Described as “glitch jazz”, the project combines acoustic instruments, electronic textures, manipulated sounds and digital errors. Four albums were released between 2013 and 2023, including glitch jazz, Snail Charmers, Mutation and Ouija.

He later developed a more ambient and atmospheric approach with DE GHOST, a solo electronic project exploring minimalism, texture and space.

Caillet's work has increasingly focused on composition and production, and on creating musical environments in which electronic sound and improvisation can interact freely. He has collaborated with artists including Rodolphe Burger and Christophe Calpini, notably on Burger's album Avalanche.

His current projects include the Matthieu Michel Trio, featuring trumpeter Matthieu Michel, double bassist Patrice Moret and drummer and electronic musician Christophe Calpini. For the trio, Caillet created the electronic foundations and musical environments supporting the musicians' improvisations.
